šŸ’° Venture Capital News

Pitchbook: How-to guide: Raising your first VC fund

  • VC fundraising is becoming more challenging, especially for first-time managers, as highlighted in the article on raising debut VC funds.

  • In the first nine months of 2023, only 81 debut VC vehicles closed, amounting to $6.1 billion, in contrast to 292 funds and $10.3 billion in 2022.

  • Larger, established venture funds are currently attracting more capital.

  • According to Jeff Herbst, managing partner of GFT Ventures, differentiation is crucial. New managers must stand out by defining their investment strategy, including sectors, stages, geographical preferences, and their role in supporting portfolio companies.

  • Showing relevant experience is vital in convincing LPs to commit. This includes having a track record, experience in VC or as founders-turned-operators, and demonstrating unique advantages in sourcing the best startups.
