Pitchbook: VCs chow down more equity in recent financing roundsVC Industry Downturn:

  1. VCs Gaining Larger Stakes: Venture capitalists (VCs) are acquiring larger equity stakes in companies, a positive aspect amidst the venture downturn.

  2. Change in Valuations: During the pandemic boom, VCs accepted smaller ownership percentages due to high valuations. However, these valuations have now decreased, allowing VCs to buy larger portions with the same investment.

  3. Equity Stake Trends: In mature companies, median equity stakes have increased to 14.9% in 2023, up from 11.3% in 2021, according to PitchBook's Q3 2023 US VC Valuations Report.

  4. Ownership and Influence: Larger ownership stakes provide VCs with more significant returns upon successful exits, greater influence over business direction, and potential board seats.

  5. Expected Increase in Ownership Percentages: Ownership percentages across all stages aren't yet at historical levels, but are expected to continue increasing as more companies seek capital at lower valuations.
